Representation of Criminology

Criminology is the study of crime and criminals, it includes sociology, psychology, social anthropology, and criminal law among other things. Criminology is represented heavily in murder mystery media. There are things that are done well, while other things are done badly, misinforming the audience of the practices of criminology.

Movies often use criminology elements to create a suspenseful and engaging experience to the audience. Forensic science and criminal profiling enhances entertainment value of the media for tits audience. Medias also humanize criminology professionals, characters are portrayed as multidimensional which can lead to people having a greater appreciation for real people within law enforcement, forensic science, etc. Media that portray criminology also create a platform for ethical dilemmas being explored. Medias can prompt discussions about justice and morality both in crimes and in the everyday life.

Most if not all media showing criminology, does something wrong, the media uses criminology as a dramatic effect which in turns causes them to sacrifice accuracy. Stereotypes are also often enforced which leads to a distorted perception the public has on justice professionals. Media also over-exaggerates the use of technology in solving crimes, this creates unrealistic expectations regarding the efficiency and precision of forensic tools. Media texts also blatantly ignore the procedures and realistic time amounts of criminal investigations, this causes that audience to be confused on why real criminal cases take so long.

Knowing what media texts present right and wrong will give me ideas to possibly include in my film opening aswell as staying away from the things that can misinform the audience.
