 Sub-genres in Murder Mystery

The above video, is from Colleen Griffith, her channel is all about writing and the different genres within it. This video showcases 4 of the following sub-genres in murder mystery.

The murder mystery genre is enjoyed by many, however some people may not know that there are many specific sub-genres within the genre. Most people know of the traditional sub genre, but some may not know of the 'hardboiled' or 'gumshoe' sub-genres.

1. Traditional

Medias within this sub-genre are the most common and most recognizable.A crime is committed in a small social setting like a small town or small part of a city, the crime is solved by a professional or amateur detective and the perpetrator is caught by the end of the media text.

2.Crime

This sub-genre focuses on the planning and execution of a crime. The audience follows the killer and are given detailed descriptions of the killer and their environment. It is a sub-genre that gives perspective of the killer and their situation of life that would lead them to commit the crime.

3. Hardboiled

These mysteries are similar to crime, but instead of the audience following the killer, they follow the detective. These media texts will show more forensics and give more details on how the detective comes to their conclusions of the crime.

4.Noir

This sub-genre is not as popular as they once were, they are much more atmospheric protagonists that are usually much more complex and self-destructive. They are best known for the protagonists dialogue, usually depressing.

5.Gumshoe

This sub-genre focus on a professional detective. They are experienced and often have previous background in either the law enforcement or military. They are very tough and sometimes have some form of addiction, whether it be alcoholism or an addiction to work or solving cases.

6.Cozy

Cozy mysteries are called this because they lack graphic content and bad language. It is often lighthearted and occur at a very closed off area such as an inn or a motel.

7.Capers

Capers include multiple crimes that are open to the reader and occur in plain view. The main focus of them are the planning and execution of smaller crimes such as robbery and kidnapping rather than the actual solving of the crime(s). The detectives and cops are also usually represented as uneducated and disorganized.

Knowing the different sub-genres in the murder mystery genre will help me form and plan out my movie opening. It will allow me to possibly use different elements from different sub-genres.
