The Mystery Genre in Medias

Solving a mystery is like trying to put a puzzle together. Most of the time you will have missing pieces that make it much harder to find what the puzzle shows. The mystery genre mostly involves the main characters of the media and the viewers/readers going on an adventure together from when the mystery starts to the end when it is usually solved. This blog post will go in depth about what exactly this genre is and the history of it.

What is it?
The mystery genre has many names such as crime fiction, detective story, murder mystery, and even whodunits, It is a type of fiction that often follows a crime or disappearance, sometimes both. At the end of the media text there's usually a big reveal of who has done the crime and often a plot twist. This essentially turns the viewer or the reader to turn into a detective themselves as they are also trying to figure out the who, what, when, and how of the media text. The media text will also have at least one main character who is also trying to figure out the mystery.

Why it so popular?

Although there are many mystery media texts dating back to early Egyptian civilizations, the mystery genre didn't get a lot of traction until Edgar Allen Poe published the first 'modern' detective story. It is called 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue', it is about a detective and his friend investigating the murders of a mother and daughter, that was found in their locked apartment.

It is important for me to know the history of the mystery genre, as it is still fairly new in the sense of it being popular. This helps me make my movie still fit in the genre, but still different and unique so the viewer would not get bored and set it apart from other famous media texts.
