Title Sequence Structure
In a title sequence, specifically for a movie in the murder mystery genre, filmmakers use multiple common elements to set the tone and intrigue the audience:
1. Imagery- The sequence often opens up with atmospheric shots that hint or foreshadow the setting of the mystery, like dimly lit locations, which establish the mood for the overall movie and draw viewers into the plot.
2. Music- a suspenseful score sets the tone for the mystery, the music can include sound effects such as creaking floorboards, whispers, or the tolling of bells.
3. Clues/Symbols- snippets of clues or symbolic imagery may be skewed throughout the visuals such as newspaper clippings or headlines, messages written in blood, or objects that foreshadows key plot points.
4. Credits- Throughout the sequence, the names of the cast and crew will show on screen, usually with visual effects that enhance the mystery theme. The font is also often presented in a way that reflects the mood of the film.
5. Reveal- Usually the sequence ends with a dramatic reveal, this can be the title being revealed in a sinister way, or an unsettling image that hints at the mystery.
By understanding how opening sequences are structured, I gain insight on how I should structure my own. Incorporating these elements into my project will allow me to be able to gain interest in an audience.
